I am thrilled to serve as
Honorary Chair of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer
Coalition (PBCC). This position is the perfect
complement to our outreach efforts at the
Pennsylvania Commission for Women for which I'm
proud to serve as Executive Director. The PBCC has
touched countless lives across this Commonwealth
with exemplary resources, information and strong
advocacy. We know that 1 in every 8 women in
Pennsylvania gets breast cancer, a frightening and
unacceptable statistic. During my tenure, I will
work tirelessly to further the fight against this
disease and underline the PBCC's extraordinary
work in landmark legislation, award-winning
outreach programs and innovative breast cancer
research.
As a breast cancer survivor, I am all too aware of
the critical importance of organizations such as
the PBCC. They
are a foundation of hope and stability for the
women across this state, reaching out with warmth
and support as well as concrete healthcare
options. For
instance, our traveling photo exhibit "67
Women-67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in
Pennsylvania" serves as a striking visual
reminder of the courage, hope and dignity of women
and their families who are facing this disease.
The PA Breast Cancer
Coalition
Conference, the only statewide breast cancer
conference in the Commonwealth, is another
compelling PBCC program. This annual event offers
breast cancer advocates and survivors from across
the country an opportunity to learn the latest
cutting edge breast cancer technology, detection,
treatment and recovery techniques. It is a
conference that is both emotionally restorative
and highly informative.
The PBCC has had a strong
focus on innovative legislative advocacy as well.
Due to the efforts of their activists,
Pennsylvanians can donate their tax refunds to
Breast and Cervical Cancer Research,
post-mastectomy patients can now get insurance
coverage for breast reconstruction and qualified
women are guaranteed free medical treatment if
they are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer.
Plus, there are more exciting legislative issues
on the horizon.
This is a website brimming
with breast cancer care and caring. Read our
survivor stories, get support group information
for your county, review the latest information on
clinical trials and look over our community events
calendar. The latest resources and information are
at your fingertips.
